My training is essentially integrative, client centred and technically eclectic, it uses elements of psychodynamic theory and blends experiential dynamic approaches with emotion focussed therapy. It is based on evidence from current advances in neuroscience and interpersonal neurobiology. It tends to focus on exploring our defensive behaviours and feelings, regulating anxiety to encourage tolerating feelings that have been defended against and endeavours to restructure our perspective toward them. As a general principal I focus on a more intense, shorter-term therapy.
More about my approach
My initial training is in Mindfulness Based Experiential Therapy (MBET) pioneered by Hari Murday is informed and influenced by elements of Dr Diana Fosha’s Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP) and Dr Habib Davanloo’s Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP). The model also embodies mindfulness-based elements of therapies such as Dr Stephen Haye’s Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and the practice of mindfulness is not a “bolt-on” to the approach but an integral part of the therapists daily routine. The experiential element encourages the increased awareness of emotional distress as expressed in the body, utilising moment-to-moment tracking to expedite the process of navigating toward more profound emotions. MBET uses practical and experiential techniques where appropriate to encourage emotional experience as an addition to intellectual understanding. Being client centred MBET evolves within its parameters to meet the specific needs of the individual, accentuating the approach that best fits them personally.
